When I was in high school; maybe a sophomore, a punk upperclassman gave me a mix cassette tape of half punk rock and half digital hardcore. At the time I viewed anything done electronic with computers, synthesizers, or samples as utter shit. After all, the late 90s and early 00s were full of poppy electronic beats
Holy shit, my fragile little mind was blown.
There was some Ec8or
some Shizuo
Melt Banana
and even a hilariously titled song mislabeled as Alec Empire
I've long since lost the tape, and lost touch with the guy. As I came of age around the 00s, with the rave/techno scene changing; I wound up getting into pop electronica anyways.
I'm older now, past the teenage rebellion years. I still long for music with an edge.
Whenever I mess around with music making software I try and emulate something close to pop electronic and after twenty minutes I get bored and speed up the tempo and add on a lot of effects. Seems to come out better for my tastes.
I wish digital hardcore had a longer peak and had achieved more notoriety. I still listen to ec8or and shizuo from time to time. I'm not stuck in the past, I'm just not impressed with what's out there.
Stay alternative as long as you can.
